Zu einem letzten gemeinsamen Abend, kommen noch einmal alle an der Ausstellung beteiligten Künstler zusammen, um getragen von der Idee des Rituals ein kollektives Kunstwerk zu erschaffen.

 

The crazy masters will leave the space of Freies Museum Berlin on the 5th March 2010. The participating artists will transform the space into a cult site in which they produce a collective artwork. The evening starts at 7 pm and around 8 pm the masters of ceremony will take over the sceptres.

AKTUELLE AUSSTELLUNG: DIE VERRÜCKTEN MEISTER (FREIES RITUAL)

Rituale führen den Menschen auf festgelegten Bahnen durch sein alltägliches, kulturelles und religiöses Leben. Sie strukturieren, geben Denk- und Deutungsmuster vor und sichern auf diese Weise den Status quo. Ein „freies“ Ritual ist daher ein Widerspruch in sich.

Schon immer war Kunst ein Instrument für Beschwörung, Magie und Rituale. Inspiriert von Jean Rouchs Dokumentarfilm "Les Maîtres Fous" über das Ritual einer westafrikanischen Sekte gestalten 16 junge internationale Künstler ein im Entstehen begriffenes, eigenes Ritual. Während im Film die Sektenmitglieder in Trance fallen und in die Rolle von Charakteren der britischen Kolonialmacht schlüpfen, haben sich die Künstler eigene Rollen geschaffen. So treten auf: Das Orakel, der Prophet, ein Gläubiger, der Troubadour, der Ungläubige, ein Bote, die zu opfernde Frucht, das Oberhaupt, ein Geist, der Krieger, die Unschuld, die Erlösung, das Dunkel, der Meister der Zeremonie, das Helle und das Unerklärbare.

Die Ausstellung „Satellites“ vereint aktuelle Aspekte und Konzepte künstlerischen Schaffens aus so divergenten Spielorten wie den Kunstmetropolen Berlin oder New York und Forschungsstationen in der Arktis. Das Projekt entstand auf Initiative des Berliner Künstlers Hannes Bend in Zusammenarbeit mit Emilie Trice und Trong Gia Nguyen. Alle drei verstehen sich als Künstler, Autoren, Beobachter und Globetrotter und stellen in der dreiteiligen Ausstellung die Entdeckungen ihrer jüngsten Reisen durch die Kunstwelt zusammen.

LES MAÎTRES FOUS

Rituals lead people on controlled paths through their religious, cultural and daily lives. They give structure, establish patterns of thinking and interpreting and preserve the status quo. A “free” ritual therefore is a contradiction in itself.

Since the beginning, art has been an instrument for conjuration, magic and rituals. Inspired by Jean Rouch’s documentary "Les Maîtres Fous" about the ritual practiced by a West African sect 16 young international artists create a their own – yet to be staged – ritual at Freies Museum Berlin. While the members of the sect act out typical roles of British colonialists in a state of trance, the artists have created their own characters: the oracle, the prophet, a believer, the troubadour, a non-believer, a messenger, the sacrifice, the leader, a spirit, the worrier, the innocence, salvation, the dark, the master of ceremony, the light and the unexplainable.

The three floors of Freies Museum Berlin neatly align for Satellites, three separately curated exhibitions that investigate different art world spheres and the poetics of “orbital,” outer, and inner space – from confined buildings, to the environment and vast nature, and beyond the atmospheric limits reaching into the alien cosmos.

Working independent of one another at the outset of this collaboration, Hannes Bend, Trong G. Nguyen, and Emilie Trice have put together distinctive shows from varying curatorial perspectives that are appropriately left to harmonize in unsuspecting ways over the three levels. The triumvirate of exhibitions, with their own subtitles, represent the first collaboration between the Berlin-based Bend and Trice, and New Yorker Nguyen.
