Gone Adrift

Juan Carlos Quintanas Bilderserie `Gone Adrift´ skizziert eine eigentümliche Welt voll komischer, tragischer Charaktere, gefangen in einem Zustand der Stagnation und Kontemplation. Die Bilder reflektieren die gegenwärtige globale Krise, in der jeder Einzelne in einer Welle ökonomischer, ökologischer und politischer Katastrophen treibt.

Kneipenhocker, Hinterwäldler und Möchtegern-Revolutionäre rauchen und saufen ihre Sorgen weg und bemitleiden menschenähnliche Malerpinsel, Schrotflinten, ausgetragene Schuhe, kränkliche Blumen und gestreckte Zigaretten. Die sie umgebende Welt scheint für diese pathetischen und doch poetischen Charaktere nur eine wahnhafte Illusion oder längst vergessen. Sie leben in einer Leere; einer absurden einsamen Landschaft in der sich Realität und Fantasie verflechten zu einer Normalität der Apathie und Dekadenz. Das Erhabene, wenn es existiert, ist eine Fata Morgana.

Aus zufällig gewählten Cartoons und Bildern entspinnen sich skurrile, zweideutige, nicht-lineare Erzählungen, die von der Angst vor dem baldigen Untergang erzählen, von Selbstzweifeln und höchster Melancholie. `Gone Adrift´ sinnt über eine Kultur nach, die bereits taumelnd vor dem Abgrund der eigenen falschen Ansprüche steht.

Juan Carlos Quintana, geb. 1964 in Louisiana, lebt und arbeitet in Oakland, California. Ausgewählte Einzelausstellungen: Pablo Galleries, Manila (2009), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts , San Francisco (2008), Jack Fischer Gallery, San Francisco (2008), Centro de Desarollo de las Artes Visuales, Havana (2004), John Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco (2004), San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose ( 2003).

 Er ist Teil der Künstlerkollektive MIJU mit Michele Muennig und Artist Formerly Known As Friend (AFKAF) in San Francisco und Manila. Die Ausstellung "Gone Adrift" im Freien Museum Berlin ist seine erste Einzelausstellung in Europa.

 
The Diluvial Hood

eine nicht - lineare, opernhafte Landschaft in zwei Akten

The Diluvial Hood ist eine abstrakte Erzählung, die in der nachsintflutlichen Landschaft von New Orleans spielt. Vor einer unfruchtbaren, verlassenen Öde stehend, erklären die beiden Künstlerpaare MIJU und Club S+S den leeren Raum zur nahrhaften und existentiellen Quelle. Sie repositionieren standardisierte, alltägliche, subversive Sitten und suchen nach außergewöhnlichen Lösungsansätzen zur visuellen Rekonstruktion einer komplexen sozialen Struktur. Die Künstler erzählen in der Manier wilder, nicht sozialisierter Kinder von einer neuen hybriden, nicht linearen Landschaft, welche aus gefundenen und manipulierten Materialien, Musik, Video und Low-Tech entsteht.

MIJU ist ein Künstlerpaar aus San Francisco, Michele Muennig und Juan Carlos Quintana. Die Zusammenarbeit began 2006 in Bay Area.

Ausgewählte Ausstellungsprojekte: Jack Fischer Gallery, San Francisco und Galeria De La Raza, San Francisco, Mag-net Gallery und Pablo Gallery, Manila.

Club S&S ist ein aus New Orleans stammendes Künstlerpaar, Sibylle Peretti und Stephen Paul Day. Eines ihrer jüngsten Großprojekte realisierten sie während des Prospect1, Biennale New Orleans mit Unterstützung der Joan Mitchell Foundation. Ihre Installationen wurden unter anderem ausgestellt in: DU-AG Munich, The Shaw Center for The Arts, Baton Rouge and the Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans.

Gone Adrift


The new series of paintings, "Gone Adrift" depicts an idiosyncratic world full of comic/tragic characters caught in a state of stagnation and contemplation. The paintings reflect upon our contemporary global condition in which the individual finds itself adrift amidst a dehumanizing wave of economic, environmental and political crises. Smoking and drinking their woes away, barflies, denizens, hillbillies, and wanna-be revolutionaries commiserate with anthropomorphic paintbrushes, shotguns, weathered shoes, sickly flowers, and elongated cigarettes. These pathetic, yet poetic characters seem to either be delusional or oblivious to the state of the world around them.  They seem to live in a void; an absurd desolate landscape where apathy and decadence are the norm, and where reality and fantasy become intertwined. Transcendence, if it exists, is a mirage.

I use random cartoon and found imagery out of context to create quirky, ambiguous, non-linear narratives that speak to the fear of impending doom, self-doubt, and sublime melancholy. Ultimately, these paintings ruminate on a culture ready to self-implode teetering on its own false pretenses.

Juan Carlos Quintana was born in Louisiana in 1964. He is a self-taught artist currently living and working in Oakland, California.   He has shown in many San Francisco Bay Area venues such as John Berggruen Gallery, Jack Fischer Gallery, San Jose Museum of Art, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts just to name a few. He has also shown internationally at the Centro de Desarollo de las Artes Visuales, in Havana, Cuba and Pablo Galleries in Manila, Philippines. He has been awarded artist residencies at the Djerassi Resident Program in Woodside, California and will be artist in resident at the Oberpfalzer Kunstlerhausin in Schwandorf Germany in the summer of 2010. He is part the collaborative teams MIJU, with Michele Muennig, and Artist Formerly Known As Friend (AFKAF) based in San Francisco and Manila. His exhibition, Gone Adrift, at the Freies Museum in Berlin in June of 2010 will be his first show in Europe.

 
The Diluvial Hood
a non - linear operatic landscape in two acts

The Diluvial Hood is born of an abstract narrative set in post - deluge  New Orleans. Presented through the delusional canvase of feral children, this Projekt Proposes a re-created hybrid non-linear landscape. Confronting a massive dysfunctional void, the collaborative Teams, Miju and Club S&S address the empty space as potent existential fodder. The two Teams probe unusual solutions towards Reconstructing a visual complex social structure while repositioning Standard populär and subversive mores. as is Common to both Team´s format, found and manipulated materials, music, video and General use of low-tech, will form the basis of the generated landscape.


MIJU is collaboration between San Francisco Bay Area artists Michele Muennig and Juan Carlos Quintana. They started the

collaborating 2006 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Selected exhibitions: Jack Fischer Gallery, San Francisco and Galeria De La Raza, San Francisco, Mag-net Gallery and Pablo Gallery, Manila.

Club S&S is a collaborative team between New Orleans based artists Sibylle Peretti and Stephen Paul Day. Their recent major project was realized during the Prospect1, with a grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation. Their installations had been shown at the DU-AG Munich, The Shaw Center for The Arts, Baton Rouge and the Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans.
